Today’s #SameHere Heroes (plural & 2 hands!): Becca & Kara
Both are former collegiate athletes who understand the physical & mental toll that competing at high levels in sports can take on anyone. (I believe this to be true for anyone reaching for high performance in any field or focus – music, acting, performing, business, etc.).
They both firmly believe the environment & resources available for athletes can & should change – that we should be breaking stereotypes, providing education & advocating for resources, especially around mental health.
Being podcast lovers, they thought that platform would be a natural one to accomplish some of the above, & so they created “PHIT for a Queen” (this is a pic of their team) a podcast devoted specifically to female athletes trying to balance: performance, health, intellect & time for self-care. Their story as told by one of their founders:
“As former collegiate athletes we understand how much pressure athletes face & how bc of their positions on teams, in the community, & in their schools, they are afraid to seek help.
For me, feeling the pressure to compete led to focusing on what I did have control to change regarding – my body – leading to a disorder & unhealthy behaviors around exercise & weight.
I finally decided to ask for help when I felt myself isolating from teammates, & when I physically started to feel poor.
I’ve found that surrounding myself w others who have a healthy balance & whose values align w mine is what helps me be the healthiest I can. The podcast has also helped me, by being able to help others.
I haven’t really shared my own personal #SameHere story so openly in the past, but to be honest I don’t think anyone who knows me will be surprised, so I expect a lot of support.”
