Debated taking next 2 days off – relaxing LDW, right? Then my buddy Adam sent me this article this morn, & my blood started to boil (don’t worry I’ll leave you all alone tomorrow, promise ).
Perfect timing for a NYT article on this topic, right? LDW, & prepping for the heavy workload to follow. Until you look closer.
If you’ve been following, you know I can’t stand the “1in5 mentally ill” stat that’s perpetuated, bc of how it separates us into sick & healthy buckets. After more digging, I discovered: this stat is a campaign – the originator, Big Pharma, & fed thru some of the largest nonprofits in the world. Why would this benefit Big Pharma? If there’s a thick line btwn the 1 who are “sick” & the 4 who are “healthy” – what do sick ppl NEED according to how we live on this side of the world: Drugs, & I’m not a drug basher. I take a small dose of lexapro. I am a basher of drugs being seen as “cures for the sick, or the only way to get healthy.” They’re symptom management tools, when you find one(s) that work, IF you go that route.
Back to this article – Mental ILLNESS is mentioned 11X. The headline includes the names of common disorders. The 1st paragraph: “Like 46 mill Americans…I regularly deal w a mental illness that has the potential to disrupt my daily life.” This advice doesn’t apply to the other 280 million??
What abt the 4in5, who also deal w symptoms (general symptoms like brain fog, etc.), who tune this msg out bc of the title & how it’s positioned? What if the title instead read: How to Manage Your Mental Health at Work: real world tips to help you stay happy & healthy at work.
Biggest paper in the country…LDW…tips on the work stretch coming up…& essentially this is an advertisement. If the msgs keep addressing only the 1in5, this epidemic will only continue.
