I’ll usually wait a day after a tragedy like this happens, but this seems to be the one that’s hitting home more than any we can remember, & so talking abt it while it’s top of mind (in a respectful way), is impt to educate/prevent future tragedies.
Since the passing happened, I’ve gotten msgs from ppl in their teens all the way into their 80s. It’s not common to lose someone in their prime, on a popular show – a show that discusses THIS topic, in this way. This has rocked so many.
DJ Twitch was probably the most recent loss of a public figure who was still very much in the public eye. Makes you think of Mac Miller, Heath Ledger, Chester Bennington, Chris Cornell. Awful losses.
But so much of this loss of Angus, seems surreal. His character, for those who watched the show, we were waiting to find out whether or not Fez survived into next season.
In real life Angus had JUST buried his dad. The quotes on this page are from his fam – a clear indication of Angus’ mental health struggles, & that MH was related to his passing.
I just went thru loss as many know. A 101yr old grandmother maybe we wouldn’t look at as the “same level of trauma” as a young father. With all that said, we HAVE TO as a society STOP comparing “levels” of trauma & what someone’s been thru, to others. Loss in any way can rock you.
When it comes to loss, some families celebrate a life…some families mourn for yrs w/o reprieve. Some relationships we were close, some we were not. Loss is loss. It is TRAUMATIC. It’s (opinion here) the greatest contributor to one’s MH that there is: the challenging life events we live thru that overwhelm our ability to cope in the moment.
We have to learn from situations like this. We can’t assume someone’s just ok & getting over it: “They’re a big star w a lot to live for, they’ll bounce rt back.”
I don’t believe in most cases, suicide’s a choice. I believe it’s an overwhelming of our nervous system that causes impulse error msgs of self harm. Can we as a society start to take this topic more seriously? Number 1 reason to die in the US if you’re under 50 is overdose. Number 2 is suicide. We must do better.
