Jorge Lopez: IL stint to address mental health was Twins’ decision

Progress can happen in many different ways…& employers (in this case a very public pro sports team) encouraging employees to “prioritize the pause” while they are given a window of time to heal, & their job is safe, is a HUGE step forward.

Twins pitcher Jorge López was excellent in April, appearing in 13 games w/o allowing an earned run. But things fell apart for him, & not just on the mound.

He allowed 16 runs in 15 innings since that scoreless start to the season, & after each rough outing, after the 3 blown saves & a couple of losses, he found he couldn’t control his emotions.

He said reflecting back: “I started kicking stuff, punching stuff, getting mad real quick & I couldn’t control my emotions & it snowballed.”

Now, 3 days after being placed on the IL for MH, Lopez was on the mound participating in pitchers’ fielding practice.

Imagine that – being INCLUDED, not ostracized as you work your way back. Lopez is now the 4th MLB player to be put on the IL for the new MH designation, this year. First where a team said they started the convo!

Next slides➡️ more progress:

1) Ja Morant addressing that in his time off for suspension he’s gonna work on his MH. He’s done a much better job of addressing the topic of MH than his employer, the NBA, who hasn’t even acknowledged it in their statements about Ja’s actions/suspension.

2) Recording Artist Shawn Mendes coming back to perform w Ed Sheeran after a full YEAR off to prioritize his MH.

You can take the pause, be supported, & come back even stronger. What a concept!!
