5/12/2023 Heather Armstrong, mommy blogger known for her website Dooce, dies by suicide at 47

We don’t have a veteran suicide issue, alone. Don’t have an athlete suicide issue, alone. Don’t have a doctor suicide issue, alone. Don’t have a musician suicide issue, alone. We have a SOCIETAL suicide issue, period.

Those were the words I shared (➡️slide), not yesterday after Heather Armstrong, a popular mommy blogger (one of the 1st to ever get in the space) passed….but in March of 2019!!! Over 4yrs ago!

You go to the next slide after that, the top 15 results in G**gle when you search this story, & only TWO mention the term suicide in the main title. Why? What are we doing?  If we don’t say the word…if we’re not open abt this topic, if it continues to live in the dark & in shame, nothing improves. Help seeking does not improve. Proactivity does not improve.

This woman’s husband was generously open to the rest of the world abt the cause (the same way the LIFESaver fams have been this month), & yet these major outlets leave it out of the headlines? This was not a man going out of his way to be secretive.

We lost Lance Blanks this wk to suicide: former NBA GM I worked w at the Suns. We’ve seen recent losses of musicians…actors…artists…college athletes…& these are just the public figures. If I sound frustrated, I am. We need to talk, openly to save lives.

We’re also putting a square peg in a round hole. Ppl are not feeling right, & are being fed the line: “the gold standards” are m€d management & talk therapy. We have so few delivering trauma-informed care & nervous system/mind-body modalities to get to the source of what ails us.

This was a big motivation behind a project 4yrs in the making (slide➡️): The STARR (Stress & Trauma, Active Release & Rewiring) 16 module course that ANYONE can take. Advanced enough for CEUs for professionals, simple enough of us laypeople to learn from. We need a “Gym for Our Brain” the way we do for our body. Thankful to giants in this space like Dr Porges from Polyvagal, Dr Felitti from the ACE study & inventors of healing modalities for collaborating on this.

If we don’t talk openly…& don’t find modalities that get to the source, these tragedies continue. We can be the change.
