12/23/2021 We Can Rise Above And Outperform Expectations

Serendipitously, this story entered my feed the day after we came back from the Miami Dolphins SameHere “Recovery Event” I shared from Sunday, in the last post.  Why Serendipitously?

The @maxxcrosby story is amazing….& it’s abt rehab & recovery in his own world. However, there’s a “but” we need to get into…

Crosby, the third-year Raiders DE got emotional when discussing his first Pro Bowl selection on Monday, shortly after the Raiders’ last-second win over the Browns (the day after our Dolphins event). As he noted in his postgame interview, he was in rehab for a month in early 2020 while dealing w alcoholism.

Yes, that’s an INCREDIBLE turnaround story. The headline reads like a movie: “From Rehab to Pro Bowl in Two Years.” Here’s the “but”…

Once again, we learn nothing abt what led up to the rehab. Go read an article – any article, on the Crosby accomplishment. You’ll find out abt how this turnaround impacted his family…his girlfriend. You’ll find out abt the close relationship w his Defensive coaches & teammates. But what you won’t find out is: the what, the how, & the why.

Those details are important – bc much like we discussed at the Dolphins event – addiction, alcoholism, drug abuse, etc…they are not this “separate” class of ppl who are “messed up in that way.” There are underlying reasons as to why we use. There is emotional pain from events lived through.

And…the details of those events are what BINDS us – not the “isms” or the “holics,” alone. That’s just where we end up, bc we didn’t know where else to turn.

As most know, we work closely w Robin Lehner of the Golden Knights. Robin doesn’t ever want to be abt showing the NHL world, ONLY, that you can rise above challenges. He wants to be a beacon of hope for anyone, in any arena of life, that you can rise above your challenges & perform even after/while facing them.

Crosby is another example, along w Robin, that we can rise above & even outperform expectations – on the field, in the office, at home, w family.

But we gotta start focusing on the how. On the details that bind us. We don’t just overcome vices. We overcome a LOT more life throws at us.
