03/30/2022 Why When It Comes To Emotional Dysregulation Do We As A Society Protect The Behaviour Of Some People While Calling The Other ‘Crazy’ Or ‘Unhinged’?

This story is all the buzz, bc it raises emotion – there are sides being taken. I put those sides up in a Story – was Will right or was he wrong for what he did? A wayyy simple question for a complex situation. The results it appears from a large number of responders, is that 9/10 of you feel like he was in the wrong.

I think this situation goes way beyond right/wrong.  What’s very interesting to me is how soon after the Antonio Brown incident, this Will Smith incident happened.

Following the AB event against the Jets, where he got angry/heated in the moment at his coach, did something uncharacteristic for a pro football game & took his shirt off & hyped up the opposing crowd as he left, we had commentators talking abt how he should be in a straitjacket…NFL Legends saying he was “crazy” for what he did. Those were the comments from ppl IN the industry. AB was absolutely destroyed by the public on social media.

Now, we can’t compare “levels” of – snapping at a coach’s decision & taking that action, to running on stage at a formal made-for-TV event, slapping the host & yelling obscenities at him.  How do you put a definitive value of one vs the other in terms of loss of control (this is me trying to not take sides here ;)).

BUT, did both not show emotional dysregulation? An inability as an adult, to take a situation, deal w it in the moment, take a deep breath…NOT make a scene in addressing it in an unprofessional way at the moment…& find time after to explain their distaste of the other person’s actions/decisions (maybe an even more impactful way)?

I’m not beyond any of this. As a competitive/emotional kid, if I had $1 for every time I went off on a ref in a bball game in an over-the-top way, I’d be a rich adult.  But then you become an adult, you work on yourself, & you learn how to manage emotions (especially in moments in front of lots of ppl). Bc listen – who hasn’t lost it on a fam member or friend in the last 5 yrs?

Here’s my main point in all of this; AB is just one example: He’s been called everything from unhinged to crazy for his actions that day (& yes other actions to be fair). Yet in Will’s (Cont➡️)
