We do events all the time…anyone in the advocacy space does them pretty consistently…& we leave ways for folks to contact us. Some of us even leave out cards & we don’t even know who takes them bc they are left out on a table for anyone to grab.
A lot of the time the follow-up is: I love what you’re doing, how can I get involved? or: We’d love to have you come out & partner on an event. While both those are humbling, nothing is more humbling (& meaningful) than they type of reach out you see on the 2nd slide here ➡️.
Got that text msg last nt (bc I put my cell on my cards), from someone who was in the audience for the SameHere Citi Field nt w the Mets in the beginning of May. It’s now 2 months later, & someone I’ve never spoken w personally, on the phone, is texting me at a late hour, bc they’re in their most vulnerable state.
Why share? I want people to see how your vulnerability is literally your key to connection – but that when you are vulnerable consistently, you are a safe place – an individual or a team – for folks to trust to open up to & lean on, in the most critical times.
Consistency in this case, is w the Mets & their awesome team. SameHere Citi went into Year 2. @mikesweetney a former pro athlete was there by my side a 2nd yr in a row being vulnerable. Our doctors on our alliance Rosa & Gruttadauri were representing a 2nd yr in a row. We sat w a group of fans for the 2nd yr in a row…& the Mets used their video board to keep the message to all fans, consistent, for a 2nd yr in a row. Slides➡️.
As Theo often says: “We collect people. That is our job description.” He says that bc that’s what people need…they need a safe place that’s shown consistent vulnerability, that they can come to in their time of need…bc we ALL have times of need, & there is too much judgment in our society right now.
I share this as what I hope is a motivation – to anyone who reads this. Please use your power of vulnerability. Please open up. Please be consistent. There is no greater purpose than helping & even saving another life. We need to create that network of safety in society & you can be part of that large safety net!
