I, like most of you I’m sure, was gutted yesterday…then if you see Stories, couldn’t fall asleep last nt, thinking of these 19 kids & 2 teachers.
We’ve seen so many mass shooting tragedies in this country – from Columbine to Sandy Hook to Parkland, & on now thru Uvalde. Here’s my question: have we seen ANY change, by discussing this topic in a partisan way? We get on politicians bc they are the essence of partisanship – & power, re-election, & lobbyist contributions. BUT – & I know some will be upset w me pointing this out & that’s OK – WE drive that partisanship w our comments & posts & finger pointing to single issues, as well.
Multivariate problems cannot, by definition, have single solutions. And yet, this is all we see on signs at rallies & on social media posts. We see SINGLE explanations & finger pointing being what’s focused on. Gonna ask again – has that type of outrage gotten us ANY closer to change?
I shared my emotions at the top, bc of course this is an emotional topic. You can have grandparents (like many who were the victims in Buffalo), down to elementary school kids (like some of the victims in Uvalde) in your fam, & the thought of them being able to be gunned down ANYWHERE from a supermarket, to school, is frightening. So, of course it elicits emotions & makes us want to scream: what are we doing RIGHT NOW?
The political left & right in this country have dumbed this topic down – for VOTES & continued special interest money. If you’re a left politician – the ONLY answer relates to gun control. If you’re a right politician – the only answer is it’s the MH of the ppl committing the crimes.
It’s not as simple as one or the other. Do we need gun law reform – YES. 90% (or at least the good majority of the country) supports closing loopholes like: no bkgrnd checks when guns are sold by unlicensed dealers. But let me ask: w how illegal drugs get in this country…do new gun laws mean guns do not get in the hands of folks who can commit these crimes?
Bkgrnd checks? How many ppl DON’T go for routine MH screenings? AREN’T “labeled” mentally ill, but would be per the DSM5 if they were assessed? (Cont➡️)
